Bom Jesus Shipwreck Room Inauguration
A voyage that lives on forever
On the 20th of August 2024, OMD 2030, in collaboration with OMDis, Namdeb, and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, proudly announced the launch of the inaugural Bom Jesus Shipwreck exhibition display in Oranjemund at the Jasper House Museum.
The Bom Jesus Shipwreck, a Portuguese vessel that embarked from Lisbon, Portugal, on 7th March 1533, disappeared during its mid-Atlantic voyage and was subsequently discovered on 1st April 2008 during diamond mining operations by Namdeb. A team of international archaeologists conducted the subsequent excavation. OMDis, in partnership with OMD 2030, convened national and international dignitaries and partners pivotal to the successful realization of this project.
Notable individuals in attendance included Deputy Minister of Education, Arts, and Culture, Honourable Faustina Caley, Joana Vasconcelos from the Embassy of Portugal, Regional Governor of //Kharas Region – Hon. Aletta Frederick, and Executive Director of MoEAC – Ms Sanet Steenkamp. The official ribbon cutting was performed by Honourable Faustina Caley, who, in her opening address, commended the Oranjemund community and lauded Namdeb’s role in preserving the ship’s remains. She also acknowledged the significance of the discovery for Namibia and the educational opportunities it presents for Namibians.
The shipwreck room now houses a collection of artifacts from the Bom Jesus shipwreck, including copper ingots, lead and tin ingots, a 1529 world map, ivory, coins, navigating tools, and kitchenware items used onboard.












Oranjemund Wins Bronze at Namibia Tourism Expo

OMD 2030 in collaboration with the Oranjemund Town Council and OMDis, attended the Namibia Tourism Expo 2024 on 24-26 April at the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino.
This annual event organised by Namibia Media Holdings attracts exhibitors in the Tourism industry as well as supporting industries alike and is attended by National, Regional, and international visitors.
The “ORANJEMUND” stall had a beautiful painting with various attractions around town incorporated, by a local artist from the Oranjemund Art Centre which added an authentic touch to the stall.
An interactive game had people winning promotional items that they could walk away with.
Furthermore, the Oranjemund stall was awarded with a Bronze certificate and a certificate of appreciation.
As the “Face of Tourism”, OMD 2030 continues to promote the town to potential visitors and investors, sharing opportunities and forging relationships.
